Different Types of Medical Plasters

Plasters are an adhesive strip of sterile material for covering light cuts and wounds. The purpose of a plaster is to prevent further damage or infection to the wound.

There are three main types of medical plaster: fabric, washproof, and blue plasters. Fabric plasters are suitable to cover and protect smaller wounds, but will often fall off when wet. Washproof plasters are also designed to cover and control bleeding for minor wounds, but can withstand moist and wet conditions. Blue plasters are waterproof, detectable and designed for use by those in food and catering environments.

Other notable medical plasters include blister plasters, burn (hydrogel) plasters and plasters for awkward angles (like knuckles and fingertips). Within these categories, there are even more types of plaster that differ in shape, size, and purpose. Find out more about what each plasters does, and when you might need to use them, with this expert guide.

Plaster

Fabric

Fabric Plasters are probably what come to mind when you think of a plaster; brown in colour with an adhesive strip on the back. These lightweight plasters are breathable, flexible and stick for a long time, but are not effective in wet conditions.

Fabric Plasters are available in a wide-range of shapes and sizes for different types of minor wound. This includes plasters for those awkward cuts on your fingertips and knuckles.

Washproof

Washproof Plasters will often look similar to fabric plasters, but are equipped with waterproof properties that repel water and dirt. Just about all types of plaster will have a washproof version – even if the original was not designed to be.

Blue Plasters

Blue Plasters are designed for those working in food and catering environments as they are waterproof, and visually and electromagnetically detectable to comply with UK Food Hygiene Regulations. These plasters reduce the risk of cross-contamination, as well as the risk of not seeing the plaster if it falls off (into food) when at work.

Blister Plasters

Blisters are mostly caused by friction, burns and skin reactions – if you’ve ever had your shoes rub your feet over a long period of time, you’ll be familiar with the painful bump.

Blister Plasters are designed to cushion the affected area and protect it from dirt and infection. The plaster will also help relieve the pressure-induced pain and accelerate the healing process.

Burns (Hydrogel) Plaster

A hydrogel burns plaster is designed for minor burns and scalds. The cool moist gel treats and protects the burn, while the outer material prevents contact and infection.
