What Equipment is Used to Measure Blood Pressure?

In short – blood pressure can be measured using either a digital blood pressure monitor (for automated readings) or by an instrument called a sphygmomanometer (for manual readings). 

Although blood pressure machines vary, they will all contain an arm cuff which is wrapped around the upper arm and pumped with air until it tightens. This tightening feeling means the blood pressure is being measured, and although it may feel uncomfortable, it only lasts for a few seconds. 

But, before we look at the different types of equipment used to measure blood pressure, let’s understand exactly what blood pressure is, and the importance of measuring it. 

What Is the Definition of Blood Pressure?

To put it simply, blood pressure is a measure of the force that your blood uses to get through your arteries, and around your body. Each time your heart beats, it uses force to pump oxygen-rich blood into your arteries that carry blood throughout your body, to enable it to function. This happens around 60 – 100 times a minute, 24 hours a day. 

High Blood Pressure 

If your blood pressure is too high, it will be around 140/90mmHg (or an average of 135/85mmHg at home) – or 150/90mmHg (or an average of 145/85mmHg at home) if you’re 80 years or older. 

If left untreated, a high blood pressure can increase your risk of developing a number of serious long-term health problems, such as coronary heart disease, heart attack, aneurysms, heart failure and transient ischemic attack. There is also the risk of damage to the blood vessels in your kidneys or eyes.

Low Blood Pressure

Likewise if your blood pressure is too low, it will read less than 90/60mmHg. Symptoms may include blurred vision, sickness, dizziness and confusion, however it is not uncommon to experience no symptoms at all. 

Equipment Used to Measure Blood Pressure 

As mentioned, the two main types of equipment used to measure blood pressure: a digital blood pressure monitor and a sphygmomanometer.

Activated simply by pressing a button, digital blood pressure monitors are most often used on the wrist and arm. Just like it says on the tin, they read the blood pressure automatically based on variations in the volume of blood in the arteries.

To use a digital blood pressure monitor, simply place the cuff around your wrist or arm and switch on the device. You will notice the cuff starting to inflate to begin the measurement, and deflate when the measurement has been taken. Once completed, the final reading will appear on the digital screen.

Sphygmomanometer
